seems like everyone converts to something else. Is it because they can't fix it? Or is it the faster path to profit?

The original clocks never worked more than a couple of years. They had some electrical contact points that became corroded and the clock would stop rewinding. You could take them apart and clean them, but the process had to be repeated regularly, so it didn't get done. If you do a quartz conversion, it will run forever.
