425 Build

Thought I would start a second thread on the engine build for the Riviera to keep things sorted out a bit.

The motor is going to be mildly modified. It has been cleaned and "Glyptaled". I think this will be the only Nailhead I ever Glytal, it is such a complicated block and I think pretty much impossible to cover completely!

I am struggling with cam selection, so I have put most of the cams I found on the Nailhead Cam specs page located here:
http://www.teambuick.com/forums/content.php?214-Buick-Cam-Specifications-for-401-and-425-nailheads

Some grinds, I did not find on the manufacture's websites, only on ebay, so they are linked there.

Piston Coatings

I wasn't going to do any coatings on the 425, but I had to do some for a sbc stroker, and figured I might as well to the Buick too! I think that may mean I am starting to slide down a slippery slope. Where do you draw the line:

Bob, those look so very nice . Have you figured out a cam yet? One of the TA aftermarkets will probably fit the bill, but some of the Nailhead performance enthusiasts like the comp extreme energy cams.

cool.

i didn't even know you could do DIY engine coatings.

I am probably sticking to a mild cam, I want a comfortable cruiser. I do have a Schnieder on the shelf. It has valve lift of .464 and .477 and .050 of 205 and 215 and lob separation of 112. I know its not what most would want, and I could go a little more, but the car is a full load with a/c and I want it to drive nice. I know much of what I am doing would normally go with a lot more cam, but I am not sure how happy I would be with much more.

My GS 400 will get more when I do it's 455.

The coatings I use are Techline. I am not sure if you have to qualify as an automotive related business to purchase them, but there are some retailing kits on ebay. Click Here...

Finally got back and did a few more things on the 425. The Crank is in, maybe tomorrow I will get the piston rod assemblies in, maybe...
The Crank is in, and the heads are almost ready for assembly. All that has been done to them is, intake guides go major tapering to the valve stem. Real "uglys" removed from the runners, multi-angle valve job, back cut valves, increase valve reliefs, radius-ed combustion chamber corners, and CBC-2 Thermal barrier.

Finally making some more progress:hurray:

Maybe I can get a coat of paint on it this weekend:bana:

The cam choice will be a disappointment to almost everyone. It is a Schneider:
intake: .464 valve lift, 205 @ .050"
exhaust: .477 valve lift, 215 @ .050"
112 center

Paint is on:

Looking good, Bob

I am a novice on cam nomenclature. Why will most be disappointed? What do the numbers mean. What would be better to "most"?

Thanks
Ben

If you Click Here at this chart of Buick Nailhead street cam recommendations, most people would not even be happy with the smallest because it wouldn't have enough or a lumpy idle. That is why Comp cams doesn't even make a cam for the Nailhead that isn't a "Thumper". To most the idle is everything, performance and drivability is secondary.

I don't have the specs on the cam I have installed, but it is a Schnieder close to the 262-70H one shown on that page. Won't have lump, but I it will be comfortable and affordable to drive.

Buick Dual Quads

Been making some progress on the 425. Lots of details go into fitting the 2x4 set up. Modified kick down, never quite figured out exactly how it was supposed to fit on to the carb. I removed the existing fitting and built a new one. Found the correct kick down bracket was available, but at $150.00 - 250.00, it was a little rich:( so I decided to build my own from two regular kick down brackets.

Built a fuel line, but I had interference with the air cleaner :( I will have to rebuild the filter to coupling line and rotate the line down a 1/2" or so to clear the air cleaner.

Buick bypass filter part numbers are:
- GM 5651305
- Delco Gf-423
- Fram G19

Started looking for an air cleaner.
Buick 2X4, dual quad air cleaner part numbers are:
-GM 1553443
- AC A59C
- Fram CA182PL
- Baldwin PA631
- Fleetguard AF1714
- Motorcraft FA43

Finally, it runs!! :hurray:
Who knows, maybe I can even get it on the road before snow flies...

I used an insulating product on the exhaust manifolds, then covered them with POR manifold paint. The paint did not stick as you will notice.
You can give me a hard time over the dramatic film start:D

I have to go through the transmission, do some interior work, and decide what to do with the rad. Not too much, but we have too much happening this summer, including a complete kitchen and other summer happenings:(
