1970 Neutral Safety switch

I have a 1970 Skylark with a console shifter. When I removed the console for my restoration I expected to find a neutral safety switch and related wiring in the shifter, there was not a switch, nor was there wiring for it. Is it possible it was removed by a previous owner? If so, is it a necessary item? I have a chance to buy a switch from ebay, but I'm not sure I need it as I'm not sure I even have the wiring to connect it. Thanks.

Your switch is on top of the steering col. near the firewall . HTH:beers:

It is like said ,on top of the steering col. about 2 maybe 3 in from the firewall and should take either a 1/4" socket or possibly a stuby reg. screwdriver to get it out.:beers:
