1964 SKYLARK GAS TANK SENDING UNIT

HELLO ALL, TRYING TO SOUCE THE PROPER GAS GUAGE SENDING UNIT FOR MY SKYLARK AS THE ORIGINAL IS A RUSTY MESS. I NOW HAVE A UNIT WITH A 5/16" OUTLET AND A 1/4" RETURN. NO ONE OFFERS AN EXACT REPLACEMENT SO I'M WONDERING IF I CAN SIMPLY ELIMINATE THE RETURN LINE? ANYBODY RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INPUT.

Probably yes. The vapor return line was provided only on cars with a/c or provisions for future a/c. The return line is there to reduce possible vapor locking. The worst that could happen is vapor lock when idling or driving slow in hot weather with the a/c on.

If problems develop there may be ways to mix and match '65 parts and restore the return line to operation.

My searches didn't turn up any exact replacement unit either. 1964 was the last year for the 30 ohm resistance element on the sending unit. 1965 and later went to a 90 ohm element. As a result, the two '64 sending units (1- and 2-pipe type) are one-year-only items.

Hey thanks for the ebay listing, that looks like a single hose unit but I'm probably going to get one and either add a return line fitting or eliminate the line from the fuel filter. thanks again, john

I just replaced my tank for a fresh 455/4 speed conversion. I purchased a stainless 1965 unit which is a 90 ohm part. The 64 gage runs at 30 ohms. It works fine but bounces a little bit more. No biggy. The sender is 3/8 with new line all the way up to the 455 fuel pump. The pumps all come with a return. I capped mine with a hose and plug with two clamps. Last pic shows the tank being pressure tested with soap water. I wasnt taking any prisoners this time. Thats 40 year old gas on the OEM sender. Bill
