263, bronze flakes in oil filter...rocker arm bushings?

The last two times I've had my oil filter out on my '53 Special (with 263), I've noticed some bronze/copper detritus in the oil filter housing/oil filter. My machine shop rebuilt this engine for me 9 years and 12,000 miles ago, and it runs and sounds the same, and the oil pressure hasn't...

Thoughts on Straight 8 Spark Advance

When I take my '53 for long highway runs, the temp gauge always creeps up as I drive. Before it was rebuilt and after. It never overheats, probably never gets above 220 (at idle after a freeway run), but it's gotten me to thinking. **It does have a recored radiator*** I've tried jetting up to...

    Oil Pump torque

Hey all--anyone know what the oil pump to block bolts should be torqued to on a 263? The manual says to "tighten." Very specific! :) Thanks!

    Heat valve bracket

Hello, I just got a new thermostatic spring and anti-rattle spring for the exhaust manifold heat valve on my '53 Special. I'm missing the anti-rattle spring bracket that bolts to the exhaust flange...anybody have one laying around that they can measure for me? I can easily fabricate one, I'd...

    Post rebuild oil pressure

Hello, I just had my 263 straight 8 rebuilt by my local machine shop…I’ve broken it in and have driven it about 75 miles or so. The hot idle oil pressure is low. Here’s what I’ve done. I drove it 30 miles today, went out and got a mechanical oil pressure gauge and hooked it right to the...

Hey all, Looking for a picture for decal placement on my rocker cover. The bracket that holds the air cleaner onto the cover seems to be in the place where the "Fireball" decal goes...any help would be appreciated! Aaron

    Rocker shaft rebuilder

Hey, Just like Rebecca, I just pulled a couple of rocker arms of my rocker shaft of my 263 while the engine's out, and they were quite scored, both the rockers and the shaft...who is the best/cheapest rebuilders of shafts? I'm already deep into the money and patience red with this thing...

    Dynaflow help quick!!!

Hey all, I have my torque converter out ('53 Dynaflow) to replace the front pump seal and the torque converter o-ring. It appears that it's also leaking from two bellhousing bolts. (?) Do the bellhousing bolts enter into trans fluid? Is there a gasket between the bellhousing and body...

    1953 Dynaflow seals

While my engine's out, I bought 2 seals for my Dynaflow from Bob's, because my Dynaflow leaks from the flexplate inspection plate--the torque converter seal, and the front pump seal. The guy on the phone told me to do the front pump seal while I was in there, because it's often a leaker...anyone...

DARN IT!! Bad Bearing...help pulling engine.

Hey all, My otherwise good running 263 has been tapping a little louder each day until today it started tapping loud enough that I'm not going to run it anymore...I took out the fuel pump to rule it out and that old hole in the block made the noise pretty darn loud...it sounds like probably...

How much oil does your 8 use?

Hey guys...my 263 seems to use quite a bit of oil...granted it's not the freshest engine in the world, but I wanted to get a feel for what other 8s use before I go too crazy!

    AC Spark Plugs

Hey all, I want to put some AC plugs in my '53 because the Champions in there are way too hot (they're 18s). I don't think AC makes the 46X that it calls for, so what plug do you all run in your eights? Aaron

    Stromberg jetting?

Anyone ever jet up a Stromberg Aerotype? My '53 has blued a couple of exhaust clamps a bit, even though the plugs look OK and it runs well. It did overheat a couple of times before I had the radiator boiled...could this have heated the exhaust enough to blue the clamps? This is a weird one...

    53 suspension squeak

Hey all, The Special's got a squeak in the left front. It seems to be coming from a lower a-arm bushing. The kingpins seem tight on it, and I'm going to be replacing the shocks this winter...how tough is it to replace these bushings?

    '53 Lever Shocks

    PCV System

Hey all, Now that my fuel pump is rebuilt and clean, I've noticed that the car seems to be seeping oil from the two ports between the fuel and vacuum pumps. I assume these ports are so pressure from the crankcase doesn't blow out the internal oil seals (so I've heard). Since I'm sure my...

    HELP! Fuel problems!

Hey all, My 263 Stromberg runs for 5 seconds then erupts fuel from the fuel bowl then dies. The fuel comes out the vent and goes all over outside and inside the carburetor and is flooding the heck out of my motor... This happens with the motor running or the starter turning it...I've tried...
