    Octane vs. compression ratio

OK, guys, I'm thinking about getting a later model Buick with (maybe) up to 10.5:1 compression ration. How do these engines cope with today's octane ratings? With the max at the pump being 91 or 92 octane rating, do you use additives and retard ignition timing? Or will the higher comp...

    Weird brake problem solved!

My 40 Super had a strange problem that no amount of thinking and adjusting was able to fix: There was always a small amount of free play in the brake pedal before feeling resistance. I adjusted the shoes, adjusted the pushrod, checked for leaks, etc. etc. Finally, after driving about a year...

    Front Suspension Help Needed

I just removed the front suspension on my 1940 Super and discovered that the inner shaft on the lower control arm ("A" arm) does not have replaceable bushings! All the references tell me to replace the whole arm. Has anybody found a way to repair this? Short of doing a front clip, that is...

Next winter I'm going to do the valves on my 1940 Super. The question is; do I need to have hardened valve seats installed on the 248 engine? Some engines (Chrysler flatheads come to mind) have blocks harder than the new hardened seats and don't need the modification. Do any of you guys have...

    Distributor question

OK, guys, here's one more. Upon stripping down the distributor for rebuild I removed the plug from opposite the grease fitting. Behind it was a coil spring and nothing else. Should there be a ball bearing behind the spring to make a relief valve? I can't figure out the spring being there by...

    Oil dripping from road tube!

Hello to all. I'm a newbie that just bought my 66th car, but my first Buick, a '40 Super Sport Coupe. I'm chasing oil leaks and found that oil is dripping out of the road vent tube! I'm guessing this is caused by plugged oil return holes in the floor of the tappet chamber, but since I'm not...
