I do not remember how my 53 was but most GM have the darn things located under the dash and are not fun to change. The last one was on my 2003 Silverado. You will need a manual to get to the darn things.

Only way I have ever found to be sure is open them up and look for numbers, take pictures, etc. Not enough experience with this many rear axles. The tags are missing from my '76 Buick rear axle so guess how I find out when I get to that stage of the restoration?
