View Full Version : Power Window Blues

Howdy,

I'm puzzled on why all 4 windows in my Park Avenue stopped working at the same time. I checked the circuit breaker - good. Checked the fusible links - good. I've got power to the master switch in the driver's armrest (comes in on the orange wire), so I don't think I have a power supply problem.

None of the windows work, either from the master switch or from any of the door switches.

The master switch has 10 leads which makes sense to me - one incoming power lead, 8 outgoing (2 for each window, one up and one down) and a ground. However, when I press any of the window switches, ALL of the other 9 leads become hot - that doesn't make sense. Doesn't matter which direction, all leads have power on them EXCEPT when I press the switch for the front passenger window. Then ONE lead becomes hot if I press UP and ONE OTHER lead becomes hot when I press DOWN - that makes sense to me.

I disconnected the master switch on the chance it is goobering up the circuit for the other windows. Still nothing from the individual door switches. I then jumpered HOT to a couple of the leads individually, still no response from any of the windows.

Where can I get a schematic and an explaination of how this is suppposed to work? It seems something must be disconnected somewhere as the simultaneous failure of 4 window motors is a little hard to believe.

Thanks,

Greg

First remove the dr. side door panel and look for the ground wire on the door sheet metal . If this is loose or broken windows will not work. Also
check where the wires go back inside ( you will have to cut the rubber open to inspect for broken wires .. common to break as they pivot ) HTH

The switch in the drivers door could also be bad.....try jumping fromthe power side to the down wire side of the switch for the windows..if they go down it is probably the switch

On majority of the mid 80's to early 90's GM vehicles with power windows I have found out that it is the switch thats has gone bad. Instead of each having a seperate power supply they went and set it up so they are all connected to the same lead but controlled from the master switch.
Hope that helps good luck
