any suggestions could help, from a cold start i find i need to open and close the choke 5-8 times to start, otherwise nothing, the idle is fine and does not stall after first attempt sometimes, i have replaced the ignition coil, fuel lines are clear with no debris, am working out some older gas, and have cleaned the carb external fairly well. would this be a fuel pump or timing issue? :coo:

Because you say you need to open and close the choke 5-8 times, I assume you have converted it to a manual choke with a cable control. Could it be that the cable is sticky and the repeated push pull frees it up and allows the choke to come on? Otherwise, opening and closing the choke doesn't do anything!

Good luck,

no conversion was made, thats why it is bugging me, it does not make much sense. i was putting in ether and one day just messing around i just opened and closed it and boom she turned over

is this an engine that hasn't been run in awhile or perhaps new to you? you state that the fuel lines are clear. what about the tank itself? your use of ether makes me suspicious of the compression. how much cylinder pressure are you generating?
