Hi!

I am trying to get some advice on an issue I am having with my trans. Any help would be appreciated

Its a 54 buick roadmaster nailhead 322 and dynaflow trans. Torque converter seal and front pump seal were leaking so I took out the trans and replaced both seals. (Everything shifted and ran great before removal- just leaked a heck of a lot!) Now that the trans is in, linkage had to be adjusted a lot just to find reverse but still having issues. As soon as I give it some gas and the car starts to move, the trans starts slipping. I cant tell if its the converter or the trans but I never opened the case or messed with the bands. Motors manual was a little vauge- should the converter have been filled with fluid prior to install of the trans? I have tried to adjust the clevis on the shifter linkage every half turn possible- I have found 2 or 3 positions that give me the best repsonse. When adjusted to one of those positions, it shifts into gear ( d, l, or r) and is fine with very light throttle. As soon as I gas it, it slips. I am starting to think that the converter (2-piece) is sort of air locked. I think I may try to open the drain in the converter and pump a quart of fluid in it manually and see what happens.
Thanks Everyone

It has been my experience that when draining Trans fluid and then Adding fluid into the system that sometimes an AIR-POCKET" develops in the torque converter creating a void.

To correct the problem I disconnect the return line to the radiator and crank the engine. Its a 2 person job. One Cranking one collecting and communication between the 2 Participets!

Crank the engine and the fluid will spurt out (Reclaim the fluid into a small bucket) when it stops spurting you will get air and the fluid runoff will Stop.

Stop cranking the engine. Add more fluid! Repeat the procedure several times untill the air is forced out of the system.

This procedure is not widely known or publised and maybe a "trick of the Trade"

I was told this by a mechanic who has worked on transmissions for a number of years as his profession.

It has worked for me in the past. It least it is one step in the Problem Solving process of elimination!

Hope this HELPS! You out!
