Mine is probably a 1968 corvette convertible.
View Full Version : What is your favorite non-Buick car? SM_General 06-19-2005, 01:11 PM Mine is probably a 1968 corvette convertible. Bob 06-19-2005, 01:16 PM I can be a softy for a lot of the Dodge stuff, especially the hemi powered ones. (Don't tell any of my Dodge friends though... smile.gif ) SM_General 06-19-2005, 01:39 PM That's good stuff. I'm not really a speed guy, more of a cruiser. I'm a really big fifties car fan. It is my favorite car decade by far. It's a little odd because I'm in my twenties. But I love 68-72 vettes. I have a 1955 Special and hope to get a 68 vette someday, but that's a long way off because I got a lot of work left on the Special. six5ryder 06-19-2005, 04:46 PM I like the 65' Cadillac El Dorado Convertible, and the 74' Camaro Z28. Dr. Frankenbuick 06-19-2005, 08:32 PM A friend talked me into buying a blue 68 Dodge Dart GTS convertible (Bumble Bee package) that he found back in the 80s. Our deal was that I would buy and drive it until he could save enough to buy it from me for the same price. It had a 4-speed manual and a high performance 340 CI engine. It was an absolute blast to drive. I hated to turn it over to him when he was finally ready to buy it, but I did! That was certainly one of my favorite non-Buick cars. My other non-Buick favorite is the convertible 03 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra in my signature. It has a 6-speed manual and a factory supecharged 281 CI V-8. Here is another picture of that because I can’t resist: http://www.rootssearch.net/mygensite/sberry/Cobra/Cobra_040711_Pass_Side.jpg SM_General 06-19-2005, 08:56 PM Nice car Doc. Looks fast as hell. bob k. mando 06-20-2005, 09:08 PM it'd have to be a tie between the 427ci GT-40 that won Le Mans and the 427ci powered Cobra. these cars are both beautiful and balls out bad to the bone ... and they can be driven on the street. doesn't get much better than that. just imagine 'em with a lighter weight BB Buick installed :D Tom Gallagher 06-20-2005, 10:55 PM You talking about Bruisers or Cruisers? It's like the story of the young bull who says to his father. Dad why don't we run down and take care of one of those cows. The older father turns to the son and says, son why don't we walk down and take care of ALL of them! :D Are You a Cruiser or a Bruiser? True Fast can be very exciting, but lasts a short while. Style,Grace and Comfort combined with Performance and Luxury is a hard combination to beat! I feel comfortable driving in my living room. If I wanted something Fast. I would have bought a Vette or Z/28. Hit a bump and the axle feels like it welded to the frame (uni-body) OUCH! I'll take the Big Ride! Caddy and Buicks any year. Packards and 60-63 Imperials. Hard to beat the later 30's Vintage Limiteds with Dual Sidemounts. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Those were the cars preferred by Royalty! Now that's driving with class! graemlins/hurray.gif Anyone, Grey Poupon! Regards, graemlins/beers.gif Tom Gallagher Robert Hare 06-21-2005, 08:42 AM My thought's exactly Tom but after a hard days work it is tough to get the grin off my face after a ride in my 73 vette. The top comes off whem it is nice and the air is on when it is hot Scotty 06-22-2005, 08:39 PM I have got to admit I love anything old and shining. All chrome bumper Vettes are cool. Anything that has survived time and the customizers earns my respect and heart. Right now my mind is having an afair with a 1972 Corvette LT-1 convertible with AC Red /Red. The only year LT-1 offered with AC because of lower RPMs. A little power with a little comfort makes it work for me. I love them all !!! Scotty 75 Riv 06-28-2005, 01:42 PM non-Buick..... that's a tough one..... GM E-bodies? (Eldorado/Toronado)..... but they're front wheel drive.... Think I'll choose a '73 Corvette jwc191 06-28-2005, 07:35 PM other than my 75 lesabre conv, my favorite is a 1976 thunderbird. i have 2, the best is the lipstick red edition, 460, fast, not out of the hole, but really fast, style and loaded. regal1973 07-04-2005, 11:30 AM I love all Corvettes. I shipped a 1982 Collector edition back to Australia in 1994 and converted it to RHD. I sold it in 1998 to finish my 1973 Buick project of & put a new kitchen in for the wife. i also like the ford & holden passanger performance cars of Australia regal1973 SM_General 07-04-2005, 12:42 PM Nice lookin' car! bobc455 07-06-2005, 07:36 PM Gotta love the Road Runners with the "silly" huge wing the new guy 07-07-2005, 02:41 PM ANYBODY INTRESTED IN BUYING A VETTE, MY BOSS WANTS TO SELL HIS, IT'S BLUE, TAN LEATHER, AND T-TOPS, 39,000 ORGINAL MILES , THIS THING IS SWEET!!! :finish: edgarb 11-07-2005, 01:12 PM Ok, you guys will probably wanna kill me but it's what I like. My favorite non-buick at this time (and probably forever) is my '78 Datsun 280z. I'll explain. The 78 S30 Z was the last of the 1st gen Z cars, also the heaviest (that's OK...they're still light) in 69 they weighed 2300lb by 78 they weighed more than 2800. BUt...it had cold A/C, was quiet, and had factory EFI that was simple enough to work on with hand tools (not computers!). The car looked like the cousin to a Jag E-type, and was RELIABLE! No wonder people love 'em! It's actually good they had rust problems, could you imagine how many DATSUNS would still be on the road if they were made from stainless steel? You simply can't break 'em unless you try really hard! I bought it from the wrecker for $1200, and replaced the slave cyl and proceeded to drive it daily (Hard) for the next two years. It still hasn't let me sit, and my total investment in her including a $2500 paint job is still under $5000. (So far, I've upgraded the clutch, installed a light flywheel, put a ZX 5-speed in for overdrive, got some 16" wheels, installed a 60mm TB and a K&N short-ram intake, installed a header and 3" exhaust, and replaced the front rotors, pads, and rear shoes) The car looks great, despite it's small size is very comfy for anyone my size (66") all the way up to 6 foot 5. It rides solidly, has no rattles, is nearly as quiet as a new car, and has a bit of power! (but..not enough. It's light but not featherweight, and it's 2800+ lbs. BEGS for V-8 power) The big'n'little (big and heavy on the outside despite an alloy head, 2.8 liters on the inside) I-6 won't quit, gets 25mpg, and despite it's 168cid, with those minor bolt-on mods, puts 169 horsepower to the WHEELS at 4800 rpm (it falls flat on it's face at 5,000, just like a stock-cammed buick :), and 179lb/ft of torque at 2800. It also has this lovely, flat-as-week old soda torque curve (the only time torque falls below 80% of peak is at IDLE) , so if I'm feeling lazy I can just leave it in 5th and cruise around all day as long as I don't drop below 20mph. (the 5-speed has a .74 overdrive, which makes the 3.54 final drive about 2.61:1 in fifth.) How to make it better? I have a year left in the Navy, after which I plan on driving my beloved Z back to PA and putting in a BUICK 350. (I like buicks, plus EVERYONE is putting Chev motors in them, i wanna be different!) bigblock68 11-07-2005, 09:04 PM My mom loves those little cars. I think they're alright but I'd rather have American Muscle because it always reminds me there was a time when America went unrivaled in horsepower and style. I do like that fact that you're dropping in a BB Buick instead of the usual (and overused) SB Chevy. There's a lot of great engines out that that'll rust in a yard somewhere that could be re-used. If I had to pick a non-Buick, it would be a 1970 Olds 442 W-30. That is undeniably the most aggressive looking car GM put out that year. The OAI hood alone gives it a "I'll run you off the road without even thinking about it" kind of look. SM_General 11-07-2005, 11:26 PM I always liked Z cars too. I know a lot of classic car enthusiasts stick to American made vehicles but I like everything. I don't care where it was made. Good Luck with that Buick motor. Good Choice. edgarb 11-09-2005, 03:58 AM Thank you for the positive replies. I don't think I'm putting in a BB buick but a SB buick, they have plenty of torque and are more plentiful. (I also have a buddy that might have an extra 350 laying around in a bit...here in PA where I'm on leave right now enjoying the snot outta my '68 skylark.) The motor he has "laying around" actually used to belong to me, as is the one in his monte carlo (yes, a 1986 BUICK-POWERED Monte Carlo...tell me THAT'S not different:), it's a 72 350, so it's not smog legal but who gives a rat's butt? (it's only driven about 300 miles a month due to gas prices) I mean, the one in his Monte actually still belongs to me, he's "borrowing" the 350 I had laying around. (He will eventually pay me with a rebuilt TH350 that will replace my ST300) He still wants an "all buick" though. He will eventually, though the buick-powered CHEVY gotta be up there with favorite "non-buicks"! He keeps asking me about the datsun, though. That's gonna be one fun swap. Pluses of it are :as compared to, say someone putting a powerful V8 into a chevette or a vega (yes, I know vega V8 swaps are common. I've also seen a powerful one twist so much the windshield broke! If you manage to do that to a Z, you probably have a WEE BIT too much power, as the stock body if not rusty will handle over 400 horsepower, which in a lightweight Z car will have it running low-to-mid 10's (which isn't bad considering they came stock with 150!) Stock rear is STRONG. R200's are known to laugh at 10-second passes. (though the halfshafts complain after 400lb-ft (at the crank), but still not bad for a car that didn't even muster 180lb-ft stock) IF you manage to break the extrememly strong 8" ring-geared R200, replacements are readily available and cheap in junkyards across the country Z32 R230(yes, that's a friggin' NINE POINT TWO inch ring gear) rear is a good, strong, relatively easily adaptable option for crazy people wanting IRS that run enought power in a Z to get it in orbit or u can back-half and put in a 9" weak points? RUST is BADDDDDD Stock brakes not adequate for the 6-banger, much less a fire-breating American bent-eight (though us classic buick drivers are all-too familiar with that problem) Umm, that's about it though Hope I didn't bore ya with all that, I get talkin (writing) about my Z and skylark and tend to ramble. jammon455 11-12-2005, 09:35 PM My all time favorite (eventho' it wasn't "factory") was a car my cousin bought because the original owner had tried to go fast too many times!! It was (I forget the year) a 240Z car and the inline 6 was really tired!! He had a 302 FORD that he was building for a street rod project: 11.5 to 1 pistons, .060 rebore, etc. and we shoehorned that baby into that 240Z! Talking about "Fun and Excitement [pardons to PONTIAC]"!!! Those rearends in those things can take quite a beating!!! I am a little fond of FORDS since they are alsoresponsible for some well built cars during the 60's and 70's taht I was a young pup driver and thus my influence! I once owned a 71' Thunderbird with a 429 HO!! It was a cruiser, but also would tear the eyeballs when juiced!! I miss it too!! jammon455 alan detrick 11-13-2005, 03:29 PM have always loved the 57 ford fairlane 500 2dr. hts. have a fully restored one with 312 3spd od, black and white. prone to outrages rust, and short lived, oil leaking, burning, blue smoking, overheating, hard starting, clacking ( did i leave anything out?) engines.... i still love em. bust one i ever saw advertised a few years ago was a covertable up in michigan with a 401 buick and th4oo. Deltawing Pilot 11-13-2005, 05:11 PM What's this...we only get to pick "ONE?" That's too tough for me to even conceive! There are so many, many cars that I have said time & time again that I'd like to own before I leave this planet...!!!!!!! http://lmccars.com/car_pictures/RR_65_CLOUDIII/001.jpg http://lmccars.com/car_pictures/RR_65_CLOUDIII/002.jpg http://lmccars.com/car_pictures/RR_65_CLOUDIII/008.jpg Either this or the 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedance de Ville owned in the movie by Auric Goldfinger (007) made of solid gold for starters... & this doesn't even begin to touch on the American beauties or other foreign beauties I have on my wish list!?!?! :D Romy 12-12-2005, 12:26 PM There are ton of choices for this...but, I'm fairly obsessed with the Subaru WRX Sti's right now. So I'll go with that! :bana: 69Tom 12-12-2005, 06:00 PM Other than my Ford Explorer, I love the old Toronados. Especially 66-72 and the 79-85. I have a 1985 Toronado. Last one with front wheel drive and the V8. Any old cruisers and muscle cars make this guy's heart beat faster but there is nothing like a Buick. :shield: Airy Cat 12-20-2005, 02:44 AM 1967 Corvette Coupe silverbulletbuick 10-29-2008, 04:10 PM I love my '85 LeSabre and my '68 Newport...but I would have to say that my all time favorite non-Buick ride would be something I could never afford, like a '60 Ferrari 250 GT SWB or the dead sexiest car ever made by human hands, the '62 Ferrari 250 GTO. Johnny Stylus 10-29-2008, 05:09 PM Gotta be from the 50s!! - or as I often refer to that decade: 'the pinnacle of civilisation'. My fave would be the '57 Chevy Bel Air. In fact, that's pretty much the car I went out expecting to buy at my local classic car dealership - but somehow I came home with a '60 Buick Invicta. Wicked styling on both cars - love 'em to bits. Johnny Stylus 10-29-2008, 05:14 PM ps - OK, most absolute ultimate car would have to be from the Concept category. The Lincoln Futura was great (it became the Batmobile after Barris got hold of it); and I was once privileged to see in the flesh a trio of concept cars made for Alfa Romeo in the late 50s, each one a different experiment in the extremes of aerodynamic styling (e.g huge curving fins which meet in the middle to form a huge arch at the back of the car). They were like miniature spaceships - the Jetsons would have driven them!! Saw them in a specialist showroom in London, and they sold soon after to a collector for more than $5 million. Yeah - I want THOSE!! Jim Carmichael 10-29-2008, 05:56 PM When I need to chase parts for my Buicks I try to always use this 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 XL 406 HP, tri power and long branch cast headers. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2139/2390186477_baa1481057.jpg gag67sky 10-30-2008, 03:46 AM Hi, well for sure my favorite would be a Plym' Superbird With the 440 6Pack in it, light blue with soft black top, But I can get no chance to find one in France, and even less to earn enough money one day to buy one !!!! Special_Deluxe 11-01-2008, 02:02 AM Got a 68 Malibu 4 door that I'm rather fond of but who can pick just one? 63 Impala. 65 Impala. 67 Impala. 62 Bel Air bubble coupe. Mid year Vettes and early Mako Shark Vettes with the chrome bumpers. First generation Camaros and Firebirds. and pretty much anything Cadillac built from 1979 on back. 69 thru 73 Ford Mavericks. Galaxie 500s from the 1960s. Model As and early V-8s with the flathead. 51 thru 53 Hudson Hornets. Darts and Valiants. The 71 and 72 RoadRunners, beep-beep! Lots more that'll come to me right after hitting "send" but ya get the idea :) cktriplett 11-03-2008, 01:00 PM There are too many non-Buick cars I like. If I have to narrow it down, then I'd say the '64 Dodge (with Max-Wedge engine) the '66 Chevy Chevelle, or the '66-'67 Olds 4-4-2. Rivman 11-03-2008, 10:36 PM A big old '59 Caddy convertible with those long sweeping fins, twin pointed dual bullet tail lights, wide whites and gobs 'n gobs of shiny chrome, inside and out ! SFC ROCK 11-07-2008, 10:17 PM I owned a 67 Dodge R/T 440 375hp . Pick it up in Columbus GA. When I was stationed at FT. Benning HOOHRAH:1st: . Love that car ,but had to let her go to take care of my family . Airy Cat 11-08-2008, 10:52 PM That would be my 2007 Corvette. It's awesom. johnnyb56 11-29-2008, 05:11 PM I think Cadillacs are the best non-Buick cars. I really like the '58's (first year with dual headlights) as well as my grandpa's 1970 Sedan DeVille that he put a 572ci in. It looks stock, but that's just the outside story. -------------------------------------------------------------- :shield:1956 BUICK SPECIAL Topless64Skylark 12-09-2008, 12:11 AM I'd choose the 71 Mach 1 I used to own, 4 speed, 429 Super Cobra Jet, Drag Pack. It was used in the Ford new car show in Oakville Ontario way back in the day. I have reason to believe that it was also the very first 429 SCJ 4 speed car built for 1971, since I recently discovered the Lois Eminger list of the first 100 Mustangs built in 1971. I should have never sold that car.:clonk::smash: lg69riv 12-09-2008, 03:58 PM My favorite non buick would have to be my 75 Eldorado conv........ or a 66 vette with a 427 52rat 12-10-2008, 03:03 PM My favorite would have to be a chopped and dropped '47 Chevy or Pontiac fastback. buick4miles 12-22-2008, 01:51 AM My favorite non buick car would probobly be, The 1960 ford mustang Boss.:bana::laugh_4::bana: 39CENT 12-22-2008, 10:11 AM I like too many cars to list however my alltime favorite individual car happens to be a Buick, or rather a compilation of Buicks in one car. the 'BUICK BLACKHAWK' http://www.buickclub.org/blackhawk/ goat 12-23-2008, 10:56 AM My favorite non Buick would have to be ( I miss that car) my 64 Malibu SS convertible black/black with red viny int.It wasn't fast but the wind in my hair (when I had hair) was fun. |
