Recently picked up a Gran Sport thin pillar(?)coupe,I think.According to picture of them, there are two different styles. One that I would truly call thin pillar and one with a wider chrome strip at the pillar. Is this considered thin pillar also with maybe a chrome trim package.

This site tells me how many skylark thin pillars but nothing about GS thin pillars.Unless there is something here that I am not seeing.

This page shows the amount of Skylark thin pillar coupes that were built but I don't see anything that shows the amount of Gran Sport thin pillars made. As a matter of fact,I can't find a list of the amount of GSs made in 1965 of any of the 3 body styles.I know from my VIN that it's a Buick(4)Skylark(44)convertible(67)1965(5)made in Flint,Mi(H)and it was the 167,977th Skylark made for the 1965 model year and it has the box frame and Gran Sport emblems. So this makes it the Gran Sport. But nothing on any plate on the car proves it to be a Gran Sport that I can find. This holds true on the convertible and the thin pillar. If any one knows more than me about this, please let me know.

Johnie-
Buick refered to all their sklark/special 2dr sedans as "thin pillar coupes". If you have a 2dr with a post, its a thin pillar coupe. The GS coupes were quite rare- most people of this era wanted hardtops- but the coupe was excellent for racing( less weight, more body stiffness) If your coupe has the chrome on the door pillars, it is because the car was ordered with that particular option package( generally, special coupes did NOT have this option) but it could be ordered on any coupe. There are 18 GS thin pillar copes listed in the Buick Club roster- you have a rare car! graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Johnie,

In 65, the Gran Sport Skylarks were made in the following numbers:

2,282 sedans (44427) - 405 3spd, 614 4spd, 1263 auto.
11,351 hardtops (44437) - 604 3spd, 3,077 4spd, 7,670 auto.
2,147 convertibles (44467) - 123 3spd, 598 4 spd, 1,426 auto.

The engine code should be LR and the engine should have the last 8 digits of the serial # stamped on it to be original.

My dad had a pillar coupe. It was white with red interior. He bought it brand new. It was the GS with the 401, console interior. It was the bare bones model, had no options except for power steering, and power brakes, and an AM Radio. It did not have the halo roof. I wish I had that car. I have wanted one for a very long time. One day I'll have one.

Jim.
