Hi people. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to classic Buicks. I come from a Buick family, though. I just came into ownership of a '66 Electra 225 convertible, that I'm planning on restoring/tuning. I'd love to pick up a 1949 Roadmaster eventually, and my daily driver is a 1997 Audi A8 4.2Q.

I have a couple of questions.

During these years (1966-1971) was the Electra the largest car Buick made? Could someone please list the four-door models of the time in order of size?

Also, I understand that Buick made two models at the time, the Sport Wagon and the Estate Wagon, right? To which sedan is each wagon most similar? Is the Sport Wagon similar to the Skylark and the Estate similar to the Electra, or something like that?

Did Buick make a wagon in the mid to late '60's that was powered by a later-model Nailhead?

Is there an online guide anywhere which lists which engine powers each classic Buick model?

Thanks a lot for your patience in my asking these questions.

Peace... Sridhar

The Electra was the largest 1966 model.

In terms of size, you had the Special and Skylark, then the LeSabre, the Wildcat, the Riveria, and the Electra. There were four door models in the Special/Skylark, LeSabre, and Electra series.

There were also station wagons, in the Special and Skylark series.

I don't think that the 401 nailhead was used in any mid/late '60s wagons. 1966 was its last year. The 300 and 340 were not "nailheads".

There are several online charts for engine sizes. Some of them are found on this site.

Go on eBay and find a 1966 Buick sales catalog, there are usually some for sale there.

Wildcats also came in 4-drs and generally had the bigger motors. The LeSabre was based on the same platform as the Wildcat but got the smaller engines. Buick had a "sportwagon" into the early 70's, based on the Skylark platform. I don't believe the Estate Wagon came out until 1970 (according to the info on this website). The Wildcat's last year was 1970 and Buick introduced the Centurion in 1971 and many new models in 1973.

From 1959 through to the 70's for sedans, the Electra 225 was the biggest car Buick made... the 225 is the length of the car in inches. Just click on the "Years Index" on the left side of the home page for a year by year listing of models

There were two different types of A-body wagons- the Special wagons and the Sportwagons. The Special Wagon was basically an extended 4-door, and Sportwagon was slightly longer & had a raised roof.

The Estate Wagon was based on the larger-car platforms.
