Might be a dumb question but here goes; I have a 1970 Skylark with the stock 350 still. It has been used and rebuilt and used and rebuilt.....

I want to swap in a "new" motor but am not sure what engines I can stuff in the car. What are the differences/similarities between the 350 in my car and the common chevy 350, can one replace the other? similiar parts? How about a 455 out of a 74? olds? I guess what I don't know is what makes of motors will be compatible with my buick? I like the 455 if the olds engine would fit with relative ease (no major fabrication).

I guess to sum it up, I'm looking for the differences between chevy, buick, olds. engines?

I am knowledgable at engines and can custom make brackets etc. just don't know the interchangability of the different motors, yet.

thanks

The Chev will require a different transmission as the bolt patterns are different. I would suggest staying with the Buick engine. If you need more muscle, use the 455 Buick. The Olds has the same bell housing pattern, but is heavier than te 455 Buick. keep it all Buick, and it will also have more resale.

I agree with keeping things buick in buick etc., but I already have a chevy 350 (mild) and the olds 455 (stock) both with trans. that are just sitting in wait of a car to occupy. I just don't know if things will "fit" if I use one of these engines. Resale is no concern to me.

thanks

would it be possible to split the drive shaft in two , the front to the chevy transplant, the rear to the buick ?? im building a buick and although the buick motors run strong, nothing beats the amount of chevy parts ready available....

The drive shafts are the same, it's the bellhousings that are different.

I say keep buick in it and sell the other two and put the money to good use and build the 350..:shifter::rod:

As I recall the Olds engine has the starter and the battery tray hook ups on the opposte side from the Buick
