Thanks for the help with my question. I got the crank to turn by hand and I pulled the radiator and the gas tank, I got them both cleaned. I pulled the water pump and cleaned out the engine as best I could.I just pulled the fuel pump which is a Holley and the carberator which is a holley 750. I called Jeg's performance parts and was talking to one of the salesmen about getting a pump and rebuild kit for my carb. He said something about the engine should maybe rebuilt before I try to start it. I keep getting the same storys, some people say it can start without any damage and others say it should be rebuilt first because of the oil slug and water passages that could have formed after 10 years. I just would like to know what buick guys think I should do with my engine Thank again for the help.

engines can be restarted after sitting for years ... but it's not really a good idea.

we've got a 455 that sat for 7 yrs that we swapped the water pump on and it runs but it's got leak down problems on several cylinders. we're assuming that rust/particles have gotten caught in the rings and valve seats. put simply, there is no way to get all of the crud out of the motor without a complete tear down and rebuild. yes, we are going to rebuild it but we've got another block being decked that we're going to swap it for.

if you insist on doing so here are some tips:
1. if you can't turn the crank over by hand with a wrench DO NOT PROCEED.
2. pull your spark plugs and squirt in oil or wd-40 or the equivalent before turning the engine over.
3. take your distributer off and use a drill/distributer gear jig to pump oil through the engine for at least an hour before you start it.
4. turn the crank over several times by hand while you're doing this over the course of the hour.
5. before running the motor place some kind of screen over the radiator intake (used pantyhose work good, cheese cloth would also probably work) so all of the crud in the water passages doesn't block up the radiator.
6. baby the motor for the first ~20hrs of operation after you fire it up.
7. don't forget to take out your radiator screen after every running for at least a week.
8. if anything makes you feel uncomfortable about doing these things or you don't think the motor sounds 'right', for god's sake, stop.

it's so much cheaper to rebuild an engine you've got than it is to throw one away and replace it.
