View Full Version : timing cover oil leak machinema 05-11-2003, 04:23 AM it looks like the oil pump gears are coming thru the cover.if i install new gears and repair the cover wil this work ? shoprat 05-11-2003, 07:00 AM Probably not... What engine are you working on. machinema 05-11-2003, 06:22 PM I am working on a 1968 buick wildcat with a 430 engine.it has an oil leak in the timing cover where the oil pump is helllllllllp..... bobc455 05-12-2003, 02:55 AM You aren't very clear about the leak. Why do you think it is leaking through the oil pump? That is a casting, and if you have worn through that then you have some major issues- I surprised the engine even runs. The clearances have to be within a few thou, and if you wore through 1/8" of aluminum then you probably need a new motor. If you have a gasket leak around the timing cover, then perhaps a new gasket is needed? You'll have to pull the balancer to pull the cover off. Tell us a bit more about your problem than just saying hellllllp and we'll see if we can actually offer some assistance. -Bob Cunningham bobc@gnttype.org theoldguy 05-12-2003, 06:49 AM One of the most common leaks in the area you are looking at is the oil pressure sending unit! Look behind the oil pump, and see if the sender is leaking.  machinema 05-12-2003, 06:33 PM the oil pump and the timing cover are made in the same casting, there is a hair line crack above the oil pump that is where oil is coming from.Thengine runs fine bobc455 05-13-2003, 03:06 AM Are you sure that isn't just a little casting defect? On my cover, there are a few little crack-looking things that are actually just a bit of extra material left after casting, and can be filed down. I've never heard of a timing cover failing that way, and can't imagine why it did. If it did actually crack there (which I'm still skeptical), then the only way to fix it is with a new timing cover. As far as I know there are no NOS units available, but TA Performance makes a hi-po aftermarket version. But it is big $$, so make sure that's actually your problem! Have you cleaned the whole front of the engine down with degreaser? I bet if you start from a clean surface, you'll see oil coming from somewhere else. Best of luck... -Bob Cunningham bobc@gnttype.org machinema 07-19-2003, 10:27 AM HI everybody it has been a long time since i have been here I am the guy with the 68 wildcat with the oil leak in the timing cover of my 430 engine.I came to find out tha it truley a crack in the cover so I removed it and took to a weld shop and for one hundred dollars they made great repairs.I am happy and smilng driving my buick. Thanks for all of the assistance that i got from you guys.... graemlins/banana.gif |
