hi, I've bought my first buick, a 1949 special mod 46S. My first plans where to change to a modern motor and gearbox but I have come to like my straight eight motor. I would like to do something to do something about the motor rpm at high speed. I wonder if a dynaflow will fit right on my motor? I have a manual three speed gear box now. Or is it possible to change the rear axle ratio? What are your suggestions?
Hope for help....

from 40 to 55 buicks came with 4.44 4.10 3.9 3.6 and 3.4 ratios.all but the 4.44 can adapt the third member,in which case the whole thing has to change out.there are differences in tail shaft and drive lines lengths depending on year and model.mark your tire and the surface it is on in the same place, turn it one full turn and measure the travel to get the ratio.most ive seen in 49 are 4.44 on the special.good luck, and you are right the buick straight eight has a special mystic.jb

I've got a '49 Super (Dynaflow). Trust me on this: Keep the manual. Tinker with the rear end gears and go up to 800-series (bias ply) or 78-series (radial) tires.

Hi, Yes I really'd like to keep the manual as well. Anyone who knows where to get new parts for the rear end gears?

40 through 55 center sections will fit your rear end. Look for a 53-55 V8 dynaflow center section. They are in the 3.4-3.6 range and will make a MUCH better road gear.

Thanks oldguy, I will go for that. If anybody knows where to find these parts I'd be glad to hear.
