The best answer to the problem is to do a good, old-fashioned tune up. Change the spark plugs and wires, and other ignition components as well (coil, and cap/rotor/module if so equipped). Clogged air & fuel filters can sometimes get in the way of making power, so you should change this too. And double-check all the other components (PCV, idle mixture, EGR, etc.) to make sure they are doing their job.
If you want to get fancy after that, perhaps an MSD 6 unit will help liven up your ignition.
If you want to risk it, a motor like that might respond well to nitrous oxide. You have to be VERY careful when doing this, but I think it would be the best way for you to add 75 or 100 horsepower. Of course if the motor is in rough shape, the extra horsepower may send it to an early grave.
After that, performance enhancements start to get really expensive. To make that motor into a serious performer, you would have to look at things like changing the rearend ratio, changing the cam, switching to fuel injection, adding a turbo, and lots of other stuff. Not simple!
