HI I'm having trouble, Here's my problem
I'm building a buick 455 in a 69 custom Skylark. The engine ran fine until a little after the following changes. I put an Edelbrock #2146 performer manifold with a 750cfm Edelbrock #1407 carb. I removed the points in the stock distributor and put a Ignitor system and a MSD 2 coil. The engine starts and will run fine until it reaches operating temp of 195 deg than it acts like its running out of gas as soon as the car is put into gear it dies and wont start again until it cools down I also put a Holley electric fuel pump and no change. I'm wondering if the valley pan sealed good my friend put it on and i'm not sure he did it right. can that pan be used more than once. graemlins/shield.gif Thanks for the help, advice

Could you be air locking on the fuel line? Check to see if it is too close to the block somewhere.

I've heard of people who re-use the valley pan (although new ones are pretty cheap and readily available), but I have never done it.

I am guessing you have an ignition problem. I have heard about lots of problems with the Pertronix stuff, enough that I won't consider using it. I think you ought to watch your ignition carefully, and consider going back to points.

Your coil is probably okay, although there are some MSD coils that are good (made in USA) and some that are junk (imported). Not all MSD coils are created equally.

I've redone all my rubber lines and put new filters before the fuel pump and before the carb no change, thanks for your thoughts though they are appreciated very much.

I thought it might be either the manifold or the ignitor since it ran fine before these changes It will be a while until I can test the car since I just sent out my steering column to be rebuilt. Thank you for your ideas I will inform you as soon as I can. graemlins/shield.gif

You may be having ignition problems. The MSD coils require a ballast resitor inline prior to the the reaching the coil. I believe it is supposed to be a .8 ohm, resistor. However the Pertronix conversion requires a full 12 volts to function. YOu may have a situation where your current is actually too hot for the system and is causing it to shut down. I spent the better part of a week chasing down this same problem on another car. I would recomend retracing the wiring from the firewall forward to make sure everything is compatable with the rest of the system.
