Can anyone tell me what the symtoms of a bad torque converter are?

This car whines badly when I am going about 60 to 70 mph. If I go faster, it seems to go away. Also, when you are going down the highway, and get on it a little, it will groan as well. Seems to drive good otherwise, but I think that there is something wrong.

Can these be rebuilt?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Yes I'm sure they can be rebuilt. Also you might want to have a look at new aftermarket converters.
I read somewhere that '60's converters convert engine torque in a 2.5 to 1 ratio and the modern ones do it in a 5 to 1 ratio or something. Basically the maths says you can double your engine torque with just a new torque converter for the same price as rebuilding your old one.

There's lots on the net and in the web sites of the various magazines about it - needless to say I can't remember where I read it. Try UK hot rods on line for a start.
Also check the Postons catalogue for options on their different converters. There's something there.

If you get anywhere let me know becuase my ST300 needs rebuilding and if what tey say is true I'll be very interested in one of these torque converters.
