I have a 1963 Riviera that has a leaky transmission. The transmission shifts and runs good, but when the car sits, it leaks fluid. I am told it is a Dynaflow transmission. My question is, before I go to all the local transmission shops around, how hard is it to find someone to repair it. I don't know if any of the nationally known chains will do a car this old or not. Can someone stear me straight before I go on a wild goose chase?

Don't do it man! The national chains won’t know what it is, and are not likely to get it right. Look for an independent transmission shop in your area that has been around for a long time and also works on old transmissions. They are likely to have the parts and someone that is familiar with the Dynaflow. I had my 63 Dynaflow rebuilt by an older transmission shop in my area. 10 years latter it is still working nicely.

Thanks Frankenbuick. I did not think the national chains would do it. That saves me the trouble of checking them out. I will have look around for an older shop as you suggested.

From my experience with several dynaflow trannies. It's most likley your front pump seal, and when they sit for long periods of time without running...they tend to rot out. So you will have to get that done.. or ppl will be slippin slidin around your area for a while if you drive er like that. It shouldnt cost much to change it. the part number for a front pump seal from 1948-63 is a (Chjicago rawhide) CR seal #17399

and from 1964-66 is a CR seal #18692
rear seal is a CR seal #15041

these should be readily availible at the local parts places. and true to what most will say. Find the old timer back yard mechanic and he will have er in and out in under a case of beer.

Best of luck... BUICKNAILHEAD

Buicknailhead:

Is that rear seal #15041 for the 63 Riviera or for the 64 and newer?
