65 Wildcat 401 4BBL Cylinder. # 1 & #4 keep fouling the plugs. They keep coming out with a black powdery surface, not oily. All others appear ok. Exhaust smells rich. Probably beacause of the fouled plugs. New wires & distributer cap. I am still running points and an oem spec. coil. Will HEI fix the problem or is it valve related? ...or is it something else?
Thanks
If the hei fixes the problem, it would only be covering it up. I would start with a compression test and see how those cylinders look.

I think you're right, it would only cover up the problem. I'll do the compression test this weekend. Thanks

All cylinders are running around 170. So I think it must be ignition. I did notice that cylinder #1 & 4 are on exact opposite sides of the distibutor cap. Probably just coincidence.
