My 1939 Century has the Gas Tank filler door built into the rear drivers side fender. When you open the door you have the filler pipe and gas cap staring at you, however unlike the more modern cars, there is no ( catch basin)(for lack of better terminolgy
You know while your filling up if you get a back splash of gas, there is a built in basin type thing that catches the gas and has a little drain.
My 39 does not have such a basin and I was wondering if in fact it was suppose to have one in 1939, and mine is missing or maybe they weren't built that way. If anyone knows I would appreciate a reply.
At any rate it appears to be very dangerous, because the exhaust pipe runs down the same side of the car near the frame rail and the filler neck pipe. Stopping for gas with a hot exhaust and filling up isn't very comforting with this configuration. I need to manufacturer something to alleviate the situation.
I don't want to become the "Rockets Red Glare" while filling up :D

He Joe,

I have a '56 and all I have is the filler pipe, without a splash dam.

If I rember correctly back then they were all made in that manner.

Of course the filler pipe is probabl about an inch and a 1/2 wide without any restrictions. It's pretty much a straight shot. You tank probably has a baffle but I don't think it causes that much back pressure so the gas will probably not bubble over as it does with modern vehicles.

Thanks for the reply Tom. I suppose then that there was never a catch basin on the 39. Next time I see another 39 , Ill have to check it out. At any rate, it hasn't been a problem so far, but I just don't like seeing that exhaust pipe in the vicinty for where I'm pumping in the gasoline. I'm always extra careful but, I just have visions of what might happen if I over fill and gas runs down the filler pipe and hits the hot exhaust.
Maybe I'll come up with some sort of home made catch basin solution.

Hey Joe,

How U Doin'?

If you go to the auto parts store you can probably come up with something.

You will need the proper material that is not affected by gasoline and is still supple enough to be streached over the larger diameter filler and form a Fuel Dam.

It is something I should look into and investigate especially since I do have dual exhaust and the location proximity is mighty close.

When gas is involved, there is not tolerance that isn't too close for comfort.

I never even considered it, Prior to you mentioning it. I will give this modification some serious thought.

Thanks for the recomendation!
