Hello Group,

I am trying to help out a good friend in sunny Eastern France. He has a 1968 Buick Electra 225 Convertable.
He is trying to find out what kind of Hydraulic Fluid is used in that convertable top system. After calling the factory, their records
only go back to 1972, and they said that they could not help.

Does anyone know that information? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks
Paul

The type of fluid recommended by the manufacturer should be stamped into the side of the motor/pump case. An easier way is to look at the hoses and see if the fluid is red or clear. If it is red, then it is automatic transmission fluid. If it is clear it is hydraulic fluid or brake fluid. Be very sure which fluid you use. You cannot mix one with the other. It will eat up the seals in the pump. Good luck.

Paul,
You can tell your friend to use good old transmission fluid in the pump. That is what the factory recommends. DO NOT use brake fluid. If it is spilled into the car it will strip the paint down to metal. Also, make sure he doesn't overfill the resevoir or the pressure will blow out the center seal between the pump & motor and he'll end up with a backseat full of tranny fluid!
