What is the valid serial number series for the 1953 Buick Rivieras? We have an original 1953 Riviera whose serial number we think ends with a I or a 1 And, where can we find it on the machine for sure.

In 1953, Riviera models covered a lot of ground in the Buick lineup. The 2-dr hardtops in all three series and the 4-dr sedans in the Super and Roadmaster series were all Rivieras. In general back then, the car serial numbers were continued from year to year.

The 53 models (all series) started with car #6740001 at the Flint, Mich. plant. A prefix digit was added to the serial number to indicate which plant assembled the car. The car numbers for the other six plants started with a little higher numbers.

From the numbers we see submitted for decoding, it is not unusual to see the letter I used in place of the number 1 in an ID number. The car serial numbers for 53 used only numbers, no letters.

The car serial number is located on a plate on the left front door pillar. It is also stamped on the left side frame rail near the master cylinder.
