On what models?. Sidemarkers first appeared on American cars in 1968.

my 66 G/S has no side front marker yet I've seen other 66 with side marker lamp's. I don't know if it is a G/S thing or not? My 69 has small side lamp's but i'am not sure if it is a G/S or not? need help determining that! Come to think of it non G/S cars all have had large side marker lamp's but I have never read any thing to support that. can any one shed some light on this?(no pun intended)

Biker, the larger lights you are seeing are cornering lamps. These were optional at extra cost and date back to 63 on some Buick series. Not real sure, but I don't beleive cornering lights were part of the GS pkg. The light is white and sort of aims at the ground. The lamp comes on only when the other exterior lights are on and the turn signal is on. The light comes on only on the side that is signaling the turn.

Side marker lights came out as a mandatory safety feature on all 68 models, like Dale says. Amber light shows in the front, while red shows in the rear. All 4 side markers come on when the exterior lights are on.

Riviera models around then combined the side marker function and cornering light function (when ordered). Hope this reply is satisfactory. We don't want you to be seeing red (definite pun intended)!

Todd,
Thanks, my book does'nt say any thing about why some are so large and some are so small. my 69 side lamp is only1.5 x2.25 compaired to others that are 2.5x 6.0 inches, and my small lamps are higher on the fender. still leaves me wondering a little.
