View Full Version : What oil to use?

Since there was so much terrific input on what fuel to run, I thought I'd ask another stupid question... What oil should I use on my 401 Nailhead? I figured a good grade 10/40 or 20/50, but someone recommended straight 30W.

Also, I planned on replacing the oil filter with a Hasting's unit, but the local parts store tells me Hastings doesn't make one.

Anybody have thoughts or experience on this?

GM used to always recommend an "ashless" 30 grade for all of its engines, due to the problems years ago with hydraulic lifters. Cheap oil used to seize them, and heavy or really light oil affected the valve timing. Any good modern multigrade oil should be ok, but always use a good brand, never cheapo stuff.

I use 10-40 in everything I have. If the engine has lots of miles and the pressure is low at idle, you might try 20-50. I agree with the previous post about quality. Use a good oil. I use Valvoline, but that is a personal preference. There are many good oils on the market.
