Hello, New to the forum. One of my cars is a 1961 Electra 225. It has a 401 Nailhead in it. I can post pictures if anyone is interested.
I think the outer ring on the harmonic balancer has spun, I can't time it anymore. Does anyone know where I can get a balancer for it?
Thanks

Two things you can do on this site is place a parts wanted ad in the "classifieds" and search the "web site database" for parts suppliers and wrecking yards.

That's for a 364. Is a 364 Externally balanced and does it use the same balancer as a 401? I know zilch about the 364.

The 364 and 401 were sister engines in 61. They used a lot of the same parts like heads and flywheels. I am about 98% sure that balancer will work for you, and the price is good. Maybe someone else here can cross-reference it for sure?
I recently uploaded a couple of "exchange" images and the one part I can't see on them is the balancer! http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/nailhead_interchange.html

Some caution is advised on this one. The parts books show different part numbers on the balancers. The 364 uses a #1189535; the 401 uses a #1357060. Whatever the difference is, it's small, there was only a nickel's worth of difference in their prices.
The 60 shop manual is closest I have for the 61. It shows a list of parts that interchage between the two engines, but the balancer is not on the list.
They could actually be interchangeable, but the two may have to be side-by-side to tell the difference.
There are places which can rebuild the old balancers. Of course, now that I am looking for the name, the data is lost.

Damper Dudes, 5509 Cedars Rd #2, Redding, CA 96001, 1-800-413-2673. I bet they could tell if the 364 balancer will work on the 401 for sure.
It will cost about $100 to have a balancer rebuilt by them. The 364 Ebay balancer would be a great fix for $15 if it will work and stays low in price.

I was looking through the forum classifieds and found a guy who has a good balancer from a 401 for 25 bucks. I feel more comfortable with this than ebay.
Thanks!
