Hi all,

In an attempt to silence a noisy A/C compressor, I tried to purchase a shorter serpentine belt to bypass it. To my surprise, it is not readily available. I found that the 1990 Skylark equipped with the same V6 204 engine, without A/C, uses the 735K6 belt. Although it is a perfect fit on my Century, it won't run straight on the lower engine pulley. It overlaps the edge of the pulley by 1 ridge on the engine side.

Anyone have a solution for the belt problem, or a way to silence the A/C compressor? Many thanks, micjoy.

My experience for what it's worth is that it's not the noisey belt or compressor, but a noisy belt tensioner.

Hi all,

Update - I cut off one of the 6 ribs on the belt and installed it toward the outside of the P/S and alternator pullies but toward the inside of the lower engine pulley. I've gone a few miles with it like this and so far so good. No noise or slippage! I'll let you know if I encounter any problems.
