My 40 Super had a strange problem that no amount of thinking and adjusting was able to fix: There was always a small amount of free play in the brake pedal before feeling resistance. I adjusted the shoes, adjusted the pushrod, checked for leaks, etc. etc. Finally, after driving about a year, I noticed fluid leaking from the pushrod boot so I tore the master cylinder apart for a rebuild - - -and found the 'free play' problem. Somebody in the distant past had installed a non-stock piston that was almost a half inch too short! So all I was doing for that first half inch of travel was stirring the brake fluid around. New piston, no play! Just something else to think about the next time the brakes seem strange! :hurray:

njlimbaugh, Thank you for sharing, the person who rebuilt the master cylinder must of had a real shady tree in his back yard. Lol.
