Hi

A few posts old but just bought a 71 GS 455 , only my second Buick in about 20 years, other cars have kept me occupied in the past. it is a driver project car and I intend to keep it a driver.

with our Corvairs we have been in clubs and in general when we need something ,finding what we need is not a problem.it just happenes over time. ya know.
So now new into Buicks . I am pretty sure there is not a local club anymore but looking for assistance from time to time when we need certain parts or whatever.
I will be using this board and others and will have many questions so thanks in advance.

I am in Ontario Canada. looking forward to learning from all of you.

Al

Thanks guys

while we are here my car has no fan shroud , will any fan shroud from a 70 - 72 Skylark work or are they different on the GS with the 455.

next it has a 70 rear bumper and 70 fuel tank , will the 71 bumper work with that tank/filler neck.

also the hood has a peice of trim missing on the nose, what should be there for a 71 GS. :)

Welcome to the site.

yes any fanshroud from a 70-72 skylark or GS should work as long as its a 455 engine.

there should be no problem with the bumper situation all though im not positive.

there should be a strip of crome on the front i think. i could be wrong so dont take my word.

again welcome to the site and enjoy the car.

The 71 bumper wont work real well with the 70 tank filler neck. You may be able to force it to work, byt the 71-72 tanks are somore readily available, you could k to a needy person.
The hood uses a trim piece, but different than a 70. Try www.v8buick.com on their wanted ads area...

Hey we are not far apart, I am in Innisfil , great a local Buick guy . not many around. in the mid 80's when I had my 70 Skylark there was the Buick GS club of Ontario but the wheels fell off that cart long ago. actually I saw one of the guys at Burl's creek selling auto supplys.

December 7 there is a show at the Toronto International center . it's a Antique swap meet , we are going to go check it out and see what we can find.
What car do you have. I may have seen it at cruise nights.

"while we are here my car has no fan shroud , will any fan shroud from a 70 - 72 Skylark work or are they different on the GS with the 455."

Answer --Yes and No --a 71 would have likely had the 5 blade fan which requires the 20 inch diameter shroud from a 71-72 . Also the water pump for the 71-72 is different. The long neck pump is needed to get the 5 bladed fan in the correct position with respect to the shroud.

A 70 GS used a 7 blade fan and an 18 inch diameter shroud. An approximate repro is made www.thepartsplaceinc.com (http://www.thepartsplaceinc.com). Correct 70 GS units used are $1000 or more. 70 units use the short neck pump.

"next it has a 70 rear bumper and 70 fuel tank , will the 71 bumper work with that tank/filler neck."

Answer--No -- the 70 filler neck will be too short to work correctly with a 71 bumper.

"also the hood has a peice of trim missing on the nose, what should be there for a 71 GS."

Answer-- 71 nose molding but it must be used with 71 headlamp doors and a 71 center support. 70 units are not the same.
