Im going to take off my water pump and soak it in some solvent to take off the surface rust and take a look at it.
I dont really want to pay $150 for a new pump and have to wait 2 weeks without having one on my car.
So im just going to clean mine up and replace the gaskets.
But is there any such solvent that will protect water pumps from corrosion?
Or anything to help treat the corrosion?

thanks.

Exterior you can paint, powder coat or POR15. The internal I would blast to remover rust then leave it as I would not take the chance of anything breaking loose and going through the cooling system.

Modern antifreeze has rust inhibitors included. I think this is a case of no action being the best action. If it ain't leaking, clean up the outside and let the antifreeze take care of the internals.

the seals are going bad. im also putting in a new thermostat. i wanted to clean off the outside and paint it. but was wondering if there was anything to us to protect the old water pumps. because you can see some rotting where the hoses connect. if i were to do any cleaning of course would be taken apart and all seals replaced.
