eh, wha?

i thought the 231ci was the equivalent of the 3.8L while the 4.1L was a later upgrade of the motor that started in the late 80's?

in fact, i believe the 4.1L Buick v6 is actually the GM corp motor and is also found in Pontiacs, Chev's, Olds and Caddy's.

Bob is correct the 4.1 v6 was used through the mid 80's I saw them in the Buick Regals , they came with
4bbl carbs. and were the larger cousin of the 3.8 v6.
Free is a good deal & great find .

the 231/3.8L was the turbo v6 that was terrorizing Corvette's in the late 80's.

now the top end turbo engines did have factory upgrades to handle all the power but the basic design is very strong and can take a lot of power.

someplace like www.TurboBuick.com would be a lot more specialized in those engines than we are though...

The 4.1 V6 was Buick engine used in the early 80's. It was used in the first Grand Nationals in 82. It was also in the larger cars of that time, Caddy, Buick, Olds and Pontiac. It used the same crankshaft as turbo engine, but, had a larger bore. I think it tended to over heat due to thin space between cylinders. It had a factory 4 barrel set up, where as the 3.8 did not. Some people had put the turbo on it.

3.3 man, it's too bad that you live so far away or i'd take that 4.1 off of your hands. what do you have that you would put it into? the 4.1 was used in a lot of full size cars in the early to mid 80's including some regals and other g-bodys. the 4.1 is a popular rebuild for turbo buick owners looking to gain more cubic inches without having to spend big bucks on a stroker kit or stage II stuff. the 4.1 is notorious for stress cracks in the head and intake valley areas. so make sure you sonic check it first before you spend any money on machining.

The 4BBL was an option on any turbocharged Regal in 78 and a few years after as well. You could order the turbocharged Regal 3.8 with either a 2BBL or with a 4BBL.:shield:

82-85 only, and it's getting hard to find decent blocks these days. (wonder why?) LOL, better grab it! they have a 3.965 bore, my 2 cents

80-85 Buick Riviera, RWD Lesabre...

Mostly not a regal engine, they usually got the 3.8.

It's a good engine, has a nice big bore, and doesn't have overheating problems unless you clog up the steam holes, like Olds engines or 400 small block chevy stuff. It comes with the same rolled filet crank as the turbo 3.8 and it only came with a 4bbl intake.

The only thing you need to do if you are using it in an older car (pre 1981) is to use the even-fire V6 distributor with vacuum advance and a non cc (computer controlled) carburetor.
