View Full Version : 300 buick question
big$grip32 02-10-2007, 03:55 PM I'm converting from a 2 barrel to 4 barrel. I know that i have the right intake #1359122 but, i have a rochester 4 barrel carb# 7024044. I've just learned today that carb # is for a 66 and up 401,425 engine. Can someone tell me if this carb will work? I can see that the carb bottom is not made the same as the intake. I'm not carb man but, so i just want know if this makes a difference or not. It bolts up the same. Also, can I run a manual choke as the 2bbl came or, do i have to change to an automatic as this 4 barrel carb is. I need to know asap, as i'm trying to get my 64 lesabre wildcat in the paint shop before spring. PS,what do i have to do to find some headers for this thing? Thanks,BIG$GRIP32.
skylark64 02-10-2007, 05:25 PM My 64 Skylark has a Carter AFB on it's 300. Is yours the aluminum intake? Don't know if it makes a difference. In the end, if the Rochester came on the 4-bbl intake, it will probably work.
As far as the choke goes, The original setup is an automatic, hot air choke. It's got hoses routing to it. I found it more reliable than the electric conversion I put on my first Skylark which had a really bad manual choke on it when I got it.
Good luck.
David
big$grip32 02-10-2007, 05:43 PM :clonk: My intake is aluminum but,the 2 barrel intake and carb were set up with a manual choke that anti-freeze went to. So, somebody must have changed it before i got the car. But, this 4barrel came with a hot air automatic choke. I guess i'll just cap the intake and just hook the hot air choke to air cleaner breather. Thanks. PS, WHAT ABOUT THE HEADERS?
Diver 02-11-2007, 10:27 AM The carb for the nailhead is too large for your 300.

If you are interested, I have (dismanteled) a complete 300 HP with aluminum heads, intake maniford and the stock (cast) exhaust manifolds. The exhaust manifolds for the 300HP are as close to "Headers" as your'e gonna get, unless you have some built.
The whole thing is for sale, complete with all brackets, Carb, etc.

big$grip32 02-11-2007, 02:14 PM Do you mind telling me the carb# and kind you have. big$grip32.
skylark64 02-11-2007, 03:41 PM I would stick with the stock manifolds. The design on the 300 is pretty good. Port match or extrude hone them if you want a little more performance but the design has already got pretty decent flow.
In my opinion, headers are too noisy anyway. Kind of cool on a drag car but I think they would seem out of place on a 300 Le Sabre. Just my aesthetic though.
I can vouch for the nailhead carb being too big. I had the stock jets and rods in my Carter AFB but I bent one of the rods and had to replace with some Edelbrock rods. It took me about a month to get the right jet/rod setup for the car. If you have to go that route, I recommend buying the Edelbrock tuning kit which comes with an assortment of rods, jets, and springs. It made it a lot easier for me to tune.

The stamped metal identification tag is missing. The top casting has "rodchester 4 jet" imbosed on it. It still has the vacumn advance, linkage, etc. attached, and it's heavy. I will send you some photos if you send me your email.

matt_lyons 02-11-2007, 09:25 PM i have a 300 engine for a 67 skylark and i was wondering where you got your intake?
PS. if anyone wants to buy a 340 intake manifold i have 2 i picked up along the way
Matt:
I think the motor is what Buick called their "High Performance", as it also came with aluminum heads (I think the compression was 10 1/2 or 11 - 1), aluminum intake manifold, 4 barrel, and cast exhaust headers. If you wish, I'll get the casting numbers and have those available if wanted. I have just put a 300 in my 40 Ford Coupe, and plan to use it as a everyday driver (when it dosen't snow).
skylark64 02-16-2007, 12:24 AM In 64, the 300 came in two options. Standard and what was called the Power-Pack. Both had aluminum heads and intake (as well as front water pump and front of the engine). The difference is in the compression (10:1 for the HP) and the carb. The power-pack has a 4-barrel. Both intakes for mine have come with Carter AFBs.
The sticker on the air cleaner says Wildcat 355 for the power-pack and Wildcat 310 for the 2-barrel. From looking at the numbers for each engine, it seems that this refers to the torque output of each.
300's in 66-67 cars were all cast iron. I've seen people in the UK put 300 cranks in 215's as well as heads for their Triumphs.
I also used Land Rover valve covers on mine. After being polished and fitted with custom oil and PCV breathers they lok pretty cool. Here are some pics:

macnjac 03-04-2007, 07:07 PM I have a complete 1965 355/300 for sale. Has all the factory options, including A/C, P/S, and I have a BRAND NEW set of Poston headers
(unused...still in the box) for the 300. I'm converting to 455 power this coming summer, and I won't have room for the small block stuff. Pick-Up
is free, but I can arrange for shipping.
The Poston headers are built to fit 1964-66 Skylarks with the 300. I've heard they might fit the 340, but I will give NO guarantees.
