Hi again.. :waving:
I need to replace the tires on my 49 Super... they have been sitting for 10 years. I think the original size is 760-15.
What is the widest radial tire that will fit on the stock rims? Will 70 series fit? 235/70-15?
I assume the limiting factor will be the rim width, since there seems to be lots of room in the wheelwell for wider tires.
Thanks
Dan

If you still have the stock rear end in the car, you may want to go with the tallest tire you can fit. The 49 Buick had a 4.10 -1 axle in it standard, and the tallest tire you can fit will make it more usable on the road. The other option is to replace the rear end with a 54-55 dynaflow unit, which has a 3.4-3.6 ratio.
The 235X75 might be a better choice, if you don't change the gear.

Thanks for the reply, I didn't think of the axle ratio...was more concerned with the rim width.

the important thing about RADIALS IS!! they were designed to Eliminate TUBES! & Eliminate Heat caused by Tubes I having worked in the Tire manufacturing way back when RADIALS were first Itroduced! I learned that by Adding alittle more Air pressure than the manufactures Recogmend! YOU will eliminate most of the Flex in all Radials & increase Your Tire Milage! just by adding 5 lbs more Air pressure You will Gain consdiderably in both Ride & Milage!--just thought?? all You Members should Know! ENJOY! Ole JIM

760x15 is approx 28.7" dia. and the 235/70x15 is approx 27.9" dia. this is only about 3% variation in speed. If you use a 235/75x15 @28.9" dia you will maintane the correct speedo reading.

Hi Dan,
I also think it's important to read correct on the speedo and so the widest and best looking tires are P 235/75 R15. If you want to see pics from Coker Classic in this size on a 49' Sedanet please mail to scheffer-elektro@t-online.de (sorry but the pics are too large to place them here) . Best Regards, Bernhard

I went with a BF Goodrich silvertown radial WW, The Goodyear's white walls looked like they were glued on, and bulged out on the side. I haven't been impressed with Cokers. I also didnt consider the profile/ height differance and bought an equivilant size in radial and should have went up a size, The differance in highway crusing IS notable, and now I'm gearing up the rear. Stay tall with your radial. ~T~

I've had two differant, NEW speedo's on, and have found that none of the old speedo's are very representative of actuall speed anyway. Take a gps for a ride and see how yours really is, don't be suprised if its off 15 mph. ~T~
